Machine Laying W.J. & H. Crozier have an extensive road works and civil engineering division which is active throughout the locality and is skilled in the job that they do. One specific squad specialises in the large black top contracts using a paving machine for example a 'Barbour-Green' or 'Blaw-Knox' for surfacing the likes of public highways, lanes, car parks, sports pitches etc. In this process a lorry loaded with material will reverse to the paving machine, connect and will gradually empty the load into the hopper of the machine whilst it moves forward pushing the lorry.
A conveyor moves the bituminous material to the back of the machine where it comes out through augers at the required width and depth it has been set up for. The material laid is then ready for compaction by roller.
Hand-Laying Another squad, which the founder member Harry Crozier organises, specialises in private work such as driveways, private housing developments, footpaths and such. This work is primarily done manually meaning that the bitmac or asphalt is discharged from chutes at the back of the lorry into a wheelbarrow. It is then emptied in regular sized heaps and the bitmac or asphalt is spread using an ordinary rake, then it is levelled using a specialist rake, a skill in itself, as levels have to be taken into consideration for to let water away so as not to cause flooding. After a small cooling period the bitmac/asphalt is compacted using a roller or a special compacting tool for hard to reach areas i.e. around tobies and gullies.
